Ozzie Guillen's substitution of Dewayne Wise helped secure Mark Buehrle's perfect game.
Everybody had a different reaction to Mark Buehrle's perfect game and the events that surrounded it. Let's take a look back and see what they all had to say
Mark Buehrle on pitch selection: "It was kind of weird. Today was one of those days I think I threw all curveballs and change-ups. I didn't throw too many fastballs and too many cutters. Normally, if I throw 100 pitches, 30 or 35 are gonna be cutters, I probably threw five today, it seemed like. But [my] change-up and curve ball was working."
Buehrle on Ramon Castro's catching him for the first time: "We just went over [reports] before and said, '[You] put it down, I'll throw it. Hopefully I'll get it where you want it.'"
Buehrle on gifts for his teammates: "I bought the guys watches last time, so that was an expensive no-hitter, and this one will probably be a lot more expensive."
Buehrle on what it takes to finish off a no-hitter/perfect game: "You just got to have everything going your way. Obviously, that last one that was hit, that D-Wise robbed out there, I was just saying, keep it in the park, give him a chance to catch it, hopefully it wasn't too many rows deep, so he could [catch it]; knowing him, he was gonna climb the wall and try to get it."
Jamie Buehrle on how she felt watching her husband: "I'm so proud of him all the time this is just amazing. It's just the most amazing feeling. You could not feel more proud of someone."
Ozzie Guillen on Wise and his catch: "We have him for a reason. We keep him for a reason. He just made a nice play. I think [it's] one of the best plays I've seen, especially in that situation."
A.J. Pierzynski on whether he wanted to be behind the plate. "Always, but just to witness that and be a part of it and see and to watch it unfold is good enough. Yeah, you want to be back there, but Ramon did a great job today and I'm happy for him, and I'm obviously happy for Mark and the organization and everything. It's pretty darn cool to say you were even on the team because that's only the 17th or 18th [perfect game] in the history of the game, so just to see it and witness it and have a small part in it is pretty cool."
Gordon Beckham on the mood in the dugout. "[Buehrle] kind of talks about [the perfect game], which is kind of funny. He came up to me in the seventh, and he was like, "What? You think I'm gonna do it?" And I just kind of looked down, 'cause I didn't want to say anything. I didn't want to say anything to jinx him or whatever."
Beckham on the magnitude of Buehrle's performance: "I'll probably never see that again. I'll definitely never play behind one [again]."
Beckham on whether he was thinking about whether a ball would come his way late in the game: "Yeah," he said with a smile. "I'm not gonna field it, we all know that. But no, obviously you want to make every play for him."
Beckham on talking to Buehrle during the game: "I couldn't even look at Buehrle when I'd throw the ball back to him after we threw it around," Beckham admitted. "I'd make sure he was looking [away] when I threw it because I was smiling so big, I didn't want him to see."
Dewayne Wise on his unbelievable catch: "That's every outfielder's dream to rob a home run. It just excited us to do something like that, and in this situation with a perfect game on the line, to be able to make that kind of catch was just awesome."
Paul Konerko on Wise's catch: "When [Gabe Kapler] hit it, I didn't think it would be close to a home run. I just thought it was going to be a gapper, for sure double, broken up perfect game. And then it just kind of hung up and carried more than I thought, but it gave Dewayne time to keep tracking it down, and he just made one of the best catches you'll ever see, considering all the circumstances. That's a great catch any night, but when you're trying to save a perfect game, that's just so hard to do because you have to be dead-on when you make that jump at the end, to make sure you jump in the right spot. I'm sure no one's gonna underestimate that catch, but however good everybody thinks it is, it's better. It's unbelievable."
Konerko on the entire setting: "In baseball, crazy stuff happens; you're around a lot of things, a lot of moments. Sometimes it's against you, which isn't as fun, but you know anything can happen. Yeah, after he made that catch, you're thinking, this is meant to be."
