Camp ends, questions remain

Receiver, D-line among issues still at large

That's a wrap.

"We got a lot accomplished," said head coach Lovie Smith after the final practice in Bourbonnais. "We're a lot better football team now than we were when we first got down here. Some of the younger players have really stepped up, should get into the mix. We're anxious to get back to Lake Forest, but everything we wanted to get accomplished down here we did."

Funny thing about this training camp: We still have the same questions now that we did back on July 30:

  • Can Tommie Harris still dominate?
  • Is the secondary good enough?
  • Will Rod Marinelli revitalize the defensive line?
  • Did the Bears make a mistake by not signing a veteran wide receiver?
  • Is Devin Hester a true No. 1 wideout?

At least there's still a long way to go before opening night in Green Bay. Other news and notes:

  • Smith said Harris, Matt Forte and Greg Olsen will play versus New York. Danieal Manning, Charles Tillman and Zack Bowman will not.

  • Per the annual tradition, the final practice featured players wearing each other's jerseys. Notable swaps included: Brian Urlacher and Jay Cutler, Garrett Wolfe and Israel Idonije, Orlando Pace and Charles Tillman, and Forte and Harris. Brett Basanez and Dan Buenning also swapped, and all I can say is offensive lineman should never don the orange top.

  • Smith said the starters should play into the second quarter.
