Why wait?

Sox need help, and Peavy may be the answer in N.Y. on Saturday

Jake Peavy may indeed be the Chicago White Sox starting pitcher on Saturday in New York.

At this point in the season, the Sox are desperate for any help they can get from their fourth or fifth starters.

After the Jose Contreras melt down on Monday against the Boston Red Sox, the White Sox starting pitchers are a combined 44-45 for the season with Mark Buehrle, John Danks and Gavin Floyd at 32-33 with a 3.92 ERA.

That means the fourth and fifth starters are 12-22 with a 5.02 ERA.

Contreras has been sent to the bullpen. Bartolo Colon is lost in space, and the team's new fifth starter -- Freddy Garcia -- faced Boston on Tuesday night with a hefty 10.38 ERA after his first start last week.

White Sox brass may be thinking that Peavy is going to throw 100 pitches in his next start, regardless of whether it's at Triple-A or with the major league team. If his elbow checks out OK on Tuesday after getting hit with a line drive on Monday, why not make that start against the Yankees on Saturday?

At this point of the season, there are no easy games for Peavy to break in with. The Sox are in the midst of 20 consecutive games with no off day until Sept. 10. In the stretch of the next 15 games, they'll need a fourth or fifth starter three times each.
