Cubs call up Chris Carpenter

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs called up Chris Carpenter from Double-A Tennessee and activated outfielder Reed Johnson from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday.

Carpenter joins into a depleted bullpen that lost Kerry Wood to the disabled list on Monday. Other pitchers like Sean Marshall and Jeff Samardzija have been used heavily lately.

Carpenter, who pitched in the Arizona Fall League, regularly hit 100 mph last fall. However his readings have been down from that.
