Hawks extend Niklas Hjalmarsson

The Chicago Blackhawks and defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson agreed to a five-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday.

A league source told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun that the deal averages $4.1 million per season.

Hjalmarsson was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2013-14 season. His new contract will run through the 2018-19 season.
