Piniella: No plans to bench Soriano

Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella responded Wednesday to a published report that intimated that a team source had said that Alfonso Soriano had been told that he will be benched early in the season if he doesn't start performing at the plate.

"Not true. It couldn't be further from the truth," Piniella said of the story that appeared in the Daily Herald. "They're all going to play. I have five good outfielders. I can't sit two of them and just play three. That, we're not going to do.

"But at the same time, nobody has been told anything. All I said to them was to be patient with me. ... Down the road, when we get into this thing, the guys who all are swinging the bat the best are the guys that should get more at-bats."

Soriano entered Wednesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers batting .222 with one home run this season.
