Garcia, who was injured while attempting to make a diving catch last Wednesday at Colorado, had his torn labrum repaired, as well as an avulsion fracture to his left shoulder.

Team doctor Anthony Romeo led the procedure. Rehab is estimated to last six months and Garcia is expected to have no restrictions once spring training begins next February.

Chicago's starting right fielder on Opening Day, Garcia was obtained on July 30 in a three-team deal that included the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox acquired Jake Peavy, who will pitch Tuesday against Chicago, from the White Sox in the deal.

Garcia hit .267 with two home runs and four RBIs in eight games this season.
