Wrist keeps Paul Konerko out

CHICAGO -- Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko will miss his second consecutive game Wednesday because of soreness in his left wrist after undergoing a procedure to dislodge a fragment in it.

Konerko, who also sat out Sunday's contest as his regular day of rest, first noticed the fragment's presence during the 2008 season and has often been able to maneuver it himself. Twice, last June and on Monday, he's been unable to dislodge the fragment from an area and has had to have a doctor flush it to another area. He had the procedure done on Tuesday.

Konerko missed two games last season because of the soreness. He said Wednesday he hoped to return to the lineup on Thursday, but he expected Friday at the latest.

Konerko leads the American League with a .366 average. He also has 11 home runs, 33 RBIs, a .445 on-base percentage and a .617 slugging percentage.

"It's kind of a weird thing," Konerko said before Wednesday's game. "It's a small thing that's not a big deal. When it gets in that joint, I can't swing a bat. It's tough."

Konerko had considered removing the fragment completely last season, but it didn't bother him again after the procedure in June and he assumed he was done with it. He said Wednesday he will likely remove it after this season.

"It was good the rest of the year," Konerko said. "It just hung out and never got in there again. That's what we're hoping again. I think we're pretty certain after the season is we're going to get to this thing out this time, so we won't have this problem again."

Tyler Flowers will replace Konerko at first base on Wednesday. Flowers, who is ordinarily a catcher, played first base in three games last season.
