ATLANTA -- The Chicago Cubs made it official Tuesday, recalling pitcher Chris Volstad in a move that cost Casey Coleman his roster spot.

With the need for a starter to fill the rotation spot of injured Ryan Dempster, the Cubs have turned to Volstad, who struggled in his previous stint with the Cubs. Volstad will start against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.

Volstad made the club out of spring training but went 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA in eight starts. The Cubs lost all eight games in which he pitched.

Coleman was also being considered to fill the Dempster void at starter, but he struggled in a relief appearance last week, giving up seven runs in 1⅔ innings during a 17-1 blowout to the New York Mets.

Volstad is expected to make at least two starts before Dempster returns after the All-Star break from a sore right latissimus dorsi (lower back) muscle.
