Chicago White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko hit in the cage and played catch on Wednesday and is on track to return Friday against the Kansas City Royals after missing a week with a mild concussion.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura told reporters on Wednesday that Konerko likely will be the designated hitter for the weekend series in Kansas City.

Konerko took an elbow in the head from the Royals' Jarrod Dyson as Dyson was crossing first base on Aug. 7. He was put on MLB's seven-day concussion list on Friday.

After being re-evaluated on Monday, Konerko resumed baseball activities on Tuesday but did not travel with the White Sox for the four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, which wraps up Thursday.
