Gavin Floyd: Elbow feels good

CHICAGO -- Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Gavin Floyd said he felt good Monday after throwing off the mound for the first time since being put on the 15-day disabled list for a right elbow flexor strain.

Floyd was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 28 (retroactive to Aug. 27). He was also on the 15-day disabled list in July because of tendinitis in the same elbow. He is 9-9 with a 4.55 ERA in 24 starts this season.

Floyd threw 20 pitches off the mound and had a long-toss session on Monday.

"I felt pretty good," Floyd said. "I was probably, I would say 65 percent. It was a little achy, but it felt pretty good. It's a step in the right direction. I'm excited about that. Just keep on doing the regimen. The next bullpen I guess would be a little longer, throwing breaking balls, so that would be the true test to see what happens."

Floyd said he would pitch again on Thursday.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura thought Floyd was improving.

"The last time he felt something in there," Ventura said. "It just keeps getting better."

Dylan Axelrod replaced Floyd in the rotation on Aug. 29. Hector Santiago started for Floyd on Monday. Ventura said Axelrod or Santiago could pitch again for Floyd on Sunday.

Floyd said he hoped to return to the team soon.

"I just hope it's 15 days (on the disabled list) and get back out there," Floyd said.
