Source: Cubs interview Eric Wedge
Wedge joins AJ Hinch, Manny Acta, Rick Renteria and Dave Martinez as those who have interviewed to take over in the Cubs' dugout. Boston Red Sox coach Torey Lovullo is reportedly next to be interviewed as soon as the World Series is over. Game 6 is Wednesday night with the Red Sox leading the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 in the series.
Wedge, who left the Mariners after his contract expired at the end of the 2013 season, has managed three years in Seattle and seven with the Cleveland Indians. He was AL Manager of the Year in 2007 after going 96-66 with the Indians before losing to the Red Sox in seven games in the ALCS.
Sources say the Cubs are interested in having a strong Latin American presence on their coaching staff.
"There are no absolute criteria, but we will prioritize managerial or other on-field leadership experience and we will prioritize expertise developing young talent," Cubs president Theo Epstein said the day he fired former manager Dale Sveum.
There are also managerial openings in Seattle and Detroit, and Renteria is reportedly meeting with the Tigers after interviewing with the Cubs early in the process. The Cubs have repeatedly said they want to hire a manager before the GM meetings in mid-November.
