Chicago Bulls general manager Gar Forman said Tuesday that the option on coach Tom Thibodeau's contract for next season will be picked up, and he hopes both sides will discuss a long-term extension in the offseason.

"Obviously, Tom's option will be picked up," Forman said. "And we started having conversations about an extension with him in the fall. And we hope to continue those discussions now that we're in the offseason.

"Obviously we value Tom greatly. We value what he brings to the organization, what he's brought to the team. We think he's one of the finest coaches in the league and we're hopeful he'll be our coach long term."

Reports during the season surfaced that Thibodeau, who was the fastest coach to 100 wins in NBA history, was upset that he didn't already have an extension. He had no head coaching experience when the Bulls hired him before the 2010 season and signed him to a two-year contract with a team option for a third. He then earned Coach of the Year honors his first year and nearly became the first coach in NBA history to win the award in consecutive years.

Reports, citing anonymous sources, said Bulls players knew of Thibodeau's unhappiness. Several campaigned after the stories surfaced for the coach to be rewarded.

"I'm not even looking at any of that," Thibodeau said on "The Carmen, Jurko & Harry Show" on ESPN 1000. "That stuff will take care of itself. I've been fortunate to have a great group of guys, a great organization, a great city. We'll have an opportunity at some point to sit down and go over that."

Thibodeau and Forman were at a press conference at Rush Medical Center to discuss Derrick Rose's ACL surgery.

"I hung around because of what Derrick was going through," Thibodeau said. "I want to get a chance to get away for a little bit and decompress and then come back and I'll think about that (contract situation)."
