CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois basketball coach Bruce Weber is as interested as anyone to learn who the school's new athletic director will be, but he knows his fate will depend on what happens on the court.

"We're excited about our season," said Weber on Tuesday. "I think over the next two years we have the potential to be very good. You got to win. That's part of basketball. I understand that. With a new person in, you got to prove yourself every season. You got to make a new impression on your new boss."

Weber's old boss, Ron Guenther, announced in May he was retiring as Illinois' athletic director after 19 years. His final day was June 30.

The school is currently searching for a new chancellor and athletic director.

"You hope something is in place when the school (year) comes around because you have to have good leadership from the top," Weber said. "I'm looking forward to the chancellor decision and the athletic director decision, and we'll go from there."

Weber was given a contract extension in 2005 which carries him through the 2014-15 season. Weber is entering his ninth season with the Illini.

Last season the Illini went 20-14 overall, 9-9 in the Big Ten. Their season ended with a loss to Kansas in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
