Class of 2012 defensive tackle Teko Powell committed to Illinois on Thursday.

The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Powell, who is from Norland High School in Miami, Fla., also had offers from Florida, Florida State, Louisville, LSU, Wisconsin, among others.

Powell had originally been recruited by former Illinois coach Ron Zook and remained interested in the school after recently meeting with new Illini coach Tim Beckman.

"Even though their last coach had recruited me, I still liked them," Powell said. "I made a connection with their coaches and D-linemen. I like that I can come in and be a part of the rotation as a freshman, so that was kind of a good to me."

Powell helped Norland to an undefeated season and a state title this past season. He had 107 tackles. Illinois now has 14 Class of 2012 commitments.
