Northern Illinois safety and return specialist Tommy Davis is transferring to Illinois, where he could provide an immediate boost to the Illini's lackluster special teams play.

Davis, who spent the past four years at Northern Illinois and earned a degree there, is taking advantage of the NCAA's graduate transfer rule to become immediately eligible at Illinois. He played in 41 games and made 19 starts for the Huskies, twice being named All-Mid American Conference as a kickoff and punt returner. The Illini ranked last in the FBS in kickoff returns and were the third-worst punt return team in the country last season under Ron Zook.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Davis also plays safety and had a career high 73 tackles in 2010. He also tied for the MAC lead with four fumble recoveries that season.
