The son of former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka was recently charged with drunken driving, and the charge was upgraded to a felony because of two previous drunken-driving charges in Lake County, multiple media outlets reported.
Records obtained by the Chicago Tribune show that this is at least the fourth DUI arrest for Ditka's son.
Michael P. Ditka, 49, was arrested April 20 in a car in the parking lot of his Deerfield apartment complex after a police officer found him with the car running, the Tribune reported.
He struggled with a field sobriety test and his blood alcohol level was found to be 0.189, more than double thee legal limit of 0.08 in Illinois. He was charged with driving under the influence, but Ditka claimed that he wasn't driving the car and has filed motions challenging the charge.
The charge was upgraded because of two previous DUI charges in the county, in 2004 and 2008.
He was sentenced to supervision and DUI school and was fined for a 2004 DUI case in Highwood.
His license was suspended at that time, the Tribune reported. Because this charge is a felony, he will not be allowed to drive pending the outcome of his case.
He also was arrested for DUI in September 2008 in Deerfield when he rear-ended a U.S. Postal Service vehicle. Although his blood alcohol was below the legal limit, he failed a field sobriety test and was ultimately sentenced on a lesser charge of reckless driving, the Tribune reported. Ditka successfully completed the terms of his 18-month probation on that charge, including mandated counseling and random drug and alcohol testing.
He also was arrested in Cook County in January 2006, charged with DUI and sentenced to probation.
