Bears to acquire Sam Hurd

The Chicago Bears agreed to terms with former Dallas Cowboys receiver Sam Hurd on Friday, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Hurd confirmed the news on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "I'm a Bear," he said.

Hurd played collegiately at Northern Illinois University before being signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2006. The 6-foot-3 receiver made six career regular season starts in Dallas and posted career highs in 2007 with 19 receptions and 314 receiving yards.

The wideout missed most of the 2008 season with a recurring ankle injury and caught only 21 passes over the past two years.

He will join another former Cowboys receiver in Roy Williams. Sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Williams wants to sign with Chicago when he is officially able to later Friday.

"I hear great things about Chicago," Hurd said. "I know [head coach Lovie Smith] is a great mind, and I hear great things about Mike Martz.

"I'm excited, and my mind and heart is open, and I get a chance to play receiver. That's all I can ask for. If the other guy is better than me, hey, I'm all about team and I'm happy for that guy. But if I can compete for a spot, I will do that."

Hurd learned under Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn upon first arriving in Dallas. Williams became a mentor later in Hurd's career.

Hurd, an established special teams contributor, should ease the loss of special teams standouts Rashied Davis and Danieal Manning. The Bears are attempting to re-sign Corey Graham, but the defense back has received interest from multiple teams, according to an NFL source.
