LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The NFL league office confirmed Wednesday that Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall will be subject to a fine -- but will not be prohibited from taking the field -- if he violates the league's uniform policy by wearing lime green cleats in support of Mental Health Awareness Week on Thursday night when the Bears host the New York Giants.

Marshall, who was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in 2010, revealed on Tuesday that he expected to be fined for wearing the lime green shoes, but that he planned to match the fine amount with a donation to charity and auction off the shoes. Marshall and his wife run a foundation that focuses on mental health awareness and education.

The Bears have dealt with uniform violations in the past. The league has fined wide receiver Earl Bennett on three separate occasions since 2011 for wearing orange cleats. After wearing the non-sanctioned shoes for two straight games in 2011, the NFL warned Bennett that as a repeat offender he would not be able to step on the field the next week unless he complied with the league's policy.

Bennett honored the NFL's request, but he wore the orange cleats again last season during a Monday night game against the Detroit Lions. Bennett received a $10,500 fine for that infraction because he was not a first-time offender.

Marshall also wore orange cleats in that 2012 game against the Lions.
