Rene Bourque banned 2 games

PITTSBURGH -- The NHL suspended Calgary Flames forward Rene Bourque on Monday two games without pay for his hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook on Sunday at the United Center.

The league says Bourque will lose just over $36,000 for the hit he made at 15:25 of the first period. He got a five-minute major and a game misconduct on the play.

He will be able to return Friday at Vancouver.

Seabrook was hit face first into the boards and fell to the ice, where he laid motionless for a moment before being helped into the locker room. He did not return.

"Seabrook is neither falling nor turning to any degree that would absolve Bourque of responsibility," said Brendan Shanahan, the NHL's head of discipline. "The onus is on Bourque to avoid this hit completely or at the very least minimize it when he sees an opponent in this vulnerable position along the boards."

Seabrook traveled with the team to Pittsburgh for Tuesday's game.
