CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled center Brandon Pirri from Rockford of the AHL, the team announced Wednesday.

Pirri's recall comes the day after center Marcus Kruger left the Blackhawks' 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh after sustaining a check to the head by Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland.

The league has until the Penguins' next game, on Friday, to determine if Engelland should receive punishment. There was no penalty called on the play.

To make room for Pirri, the Blackhawks placed forward Dan Carcillo on injured reserve.

Coach Joel Quenneville had declared Carcillo "doubtful" for Wednesday's game against the Montreal Canadiens because of a head injury, which has forced him to miss the past three contests.

Carcillo will be eligible to come off IR when the Blackhawks resume play Monday.

Pirri, 20, ranks seventh in the AHL with a team-high 31 points and is 10th in the league with 13 goals. He played on opening night for the Blackhawks in Dallas before being sent back to Rockford.
