CHICAGO -- Blackhawks forward Dan Carcillo has been suspended indefinitely pending a hearing with the department of player safety regarding his hit on Edmonton's Tom Gilbert in Monday night's 4-3 victory by the Oilers.
Carcillo extended his arms in hitting Gilbert into the end boards near the Edmonton net in the second period as both players were racing for the puck. Gilbert tried to brace for the hit, but Carcillo got leverage on him and sent him flying into the boards. He was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct while the Oilers scored two power play goals on the ensuing power play.
Both Carcillo and Gilbert left the game with knee injuries. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said Carcillo's knee was still being evaluated on Wednesday.
"We're still talking about the options with him there," Quenneville said Wednesday. "He had some tests yesterday and we're still evaluating."
When asked if surgery was an option, Quenneville said "we'll see."
Gilbert missed Tuesday's game in Buffalo.
"I knew who it was and you have to be aware," Gilbert told reporters on Tuesday in Buffalo. "I should have been more ready for a guy who has made those kinds of hits before."
This will be Carcillo's sixth career suspension including serving two previously this season. He was held out of the first two games of the year after an altercation with officials during an intermission last postseason and then was suspended again for two games after a hit on Carolina's Joni Pitkanen in October.
"It's a quick moment when you're going for a counter hit fighting for a puck," Quenneville said Tuesday. "He (Carcillo) probably had better leverage than the other guy. His intent certainly wasn't what happened."
Any potential suspension five games or longer allows the player to have an in-person hearing rather than a conference call. It's unknown how Carcillo will proceed.
Carcillo is on a one-year contract worth $775,000. He has two goals and nine assists in 28 games played, including a helper on the Hawks' first goal on Monday.
