Andrew Shaw could be disciplined

GLENDALE, Ariz -- Chicago Blackhawks rookie forward Andrew Shaw could face supplemental discipline for his hit on Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith in the Hawks' 4-3 overtime victory in Game 2 of their playoff series on Saturday.

At the 7:11 mark of the second period, Shaw hit Smith in the head with his shoulder as the two collided behind the Coyotes' net. Smith sprawled to the ice and was attended to by the trainers for several minutes but stayed in the game.

"He went to play the puck," Shaw explained after the game. "His stick came up towards my face and so I tried to get away from it and unfortunately I made a little contact. I'm glad he's OK."

Shaw was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. The game misconduct draws an automatic $200 fine and a review for further discipline by the league.

"It met all the criteria of being more than a minor penalty, and a major penalty was the right call I believe," on-site NHL supervisor of officials Mick McGeough said after the game. "To come in at that speed and make contact with the goalie, just because he's outside of the crease he's not fair game. Therefore, the guys thought it was sufficient for a major penalty, and a game misconduct because of the severity of the hit. We're not doctors. We don't know if the goalie is hurt or not. We penalize the foul not the result."

Referees Paul Devorski and Dan O'Rourke huddled with each other while Smith was being attended to before making the final call on the penalty.

"I went back to play the puck and I didn't see him coming," Smith said. "I don't have eyes in the back of my head."

Though Shaw tried to downplay the hit, Phoenix coach Dave Tippett felt there was no disputing what happened.

"Obviously that's contact to the head," Tippett said. "Doesn't matter if it's a goaltender or a player. That's blindside contact to the head. I'm sure the league will look at it."

The NHL has to rule before Tuesday's Game 3 if there will be further punishment for Shaw. The series is tied 1-1.
