"Coach's decision," Joel Quenneville announced Wednesday morning. "I had a conversation with him so he knows how it stands and what the situation is. We'll leave it at that."
Stalberg played in all five games of the Hawks' quarterfinal series victory over the Minnesota Wild, earning an assist on the winning goal in overtime of Game 1. His playing time decreased throughout the series from a Game 1 high of 18:02 to nine minutes in Game 4.
"Things change in our business quickly," Quenneville said in regard to Stalberg playing later in the series. "We'll visit as we go along."
A source familiar with the situation indicates the benching is related to Stalberg's attitude after being excluded from the power play as the postseason began. He totaled 58 seconds of man-advantage time in the five games after averaging 2:11 per game in the regular season. He stayed on the ice late Wednesday morning and was unavailable to the media.
Stalberg played in 47 regular-season games, accumulating 23 points on nine goals and 14 assists.
Dave Bolland, who missed the first series with a leg injury, will take Stalberg's spot in the lineup.
Chicago Blackhawks forward Viktor Stalberg has been benched for Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinal series against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.
