Lovie Smith was fired -- in part -- because he couldn't get the offense to match the defense's level of execution. Marc Trestman's offensive background, from his days with Steve Young's 49ers (Young is a big Trestman fan) to being the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes the last five years, convinced Bears GM Phil Emery that he can elevate an offense that on paper appears as potent as any in recent Bears history. Trestman's ability to protect the quarterback bodes well for Jay Cutler's potential for success.
