The Bears surprised the NFL with a 13-3 season and the final NFC Central title before the divisions were realigned. The Bears had a flair for the dramatic all season, with two straight overtime victories. That included the shortest overtime in NFL history when Mike Brown intercepted a pass against the 49ers on the first play of extra time and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. Sammy Sosa turned in his fourth straight 50-homer season for the Cubs, bashing 64 with an NL-high and career-best 164 RBIs.
