Frank Thomas lost out on his third American League MVP, finishing second to Oakland's Jason Giambi, who later all but admitted to steroid use. Thomas hit .328 with a career-high 43 home runs and 143 RBIs and led the Sox to the AL Central title with a 95-67 record, but they were swept by the Mariners in the ALDS.
