1949: Middlecoff wins U.S. Open

At the 1949 U.S. Open, Cary Middlecoff defeated Clayton Heafner and Sam Snead by one stroke to claim his first major championship. For Snead, it was the third of four runner-up finishes in the only major he ever won. Middlecoff went on to win two more majors, the 1955 Masters and the 1956 U.S. Open.
