Special to ESPN Classic

Red Auerbach was a coach in the NBA for 20 years, 16 of them with the Boston Celtics (1950-66).

Under Auerbach, the Celtics won eight consecutive NBA championships and nine division titles. He was also the first coach to start five black players.

When he retired as coach in 1966, Auerbach hired his star center, Bill Russell, as the NBA's first black head coach. In later years, he hired two other black former Celtics - Tom "Satch" Sanders and K.C. Jones - to coach the team.

Admitted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1968, he subsequently served as a leading executive with the Celtics. Auerbach recorded 938 wins with the Celtics. Auerbach was inducted into the Hall of fame in 1968.
