ESPN Classic Remembers Dale Earnhardt

On Saturday, Feb. 24 from noon to midnight, ESPN Classic Remembers will look back at the storied career of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt. Arguably the best driver in stock car history, Earnhardt died Feb. 18 from head injuries sustained during a last-lap crash in the Daytona 500.

Dale Earnhardt has Victory Lane reflected in his sunglasses as he celebrates winning the 1998 Daytona 500.
The winner of seven NASCAR Winston Cup Series championships, Earnhardt's aggressive style helped define a generation of drivers. Earnhardt was the first driver in the history of the sport to win the rookie of the year award and the series title at the NASCAR Winston Cup Series level. He did it in consecutive seasons -- 1979 and 1980. He was the first three-time winner of the Winston Select (1987, '90 and '93) and he won three IROC championships (1990, '95 and '99). The special 12 hour presentation will feature some of his greatest races, including his 1998 win at the Daytona 500. Here's Saturday's schedule:

They will also provide insight and commentary on the classic races that will be featured as part of the tribute.

Earnhardt holds off a determined Bobby Labonte to win the race by 0.010 seconds -- less than two feet -- for his 75th career and track leading ninth victory.

  • 9:30 p.m. - 1998 Daytona 500
    Daytona Beach, FL

Earnhardt finally wins the Super Bowl of racing in his 20th attempt, also breaking a career-long 59-race winless streak.
