Sparky Anderson is the first manager to win 800 games in both leagues when his Detroit Tigers defeat the Oakland Athletics 4-3 in a battle of division leaders.

Anderson has been managing the Tigers since 1979. Before that, he had an 863-586 record as manager of the Cincinnati Reds (1970-78).

"Sparky's had a great managerial career," Oakland manager Tony La Russa says.

Anderson says, "If I stay healthy, I might be around another 15 years."

He won't be; he will be fired by the Tigers after the 1995 season. His lifetime record will be 2,194-1,834 for a .545 winning percentage in his 26 seasons as a manager.
