Not a bad debut effort for Helton

After being elevated from interim coach to head coach, Clay Helton's first class includes 11 ESPN 300 selections. The Trojans flipped No. 3 safety Jamel Cook from FSU and snagged No. 8 OT E.J. Price. Schlabach: Top storylines from signing day

One interesting note from Clay Helton is that the coaching staff views Jack Jones, who is considered an elite cornerback, as a potential two-way guy in the mold of Adoree' Jackson. Helton didn't flat-out say he'll play offense, at least not initially, but made it clear that will be strongly considered.

USC coach Clay Helton said he was proud that every player who started the day committed to USC signed with the Trojans. He said the class is highlighted by the four defensive linemen they're bringing in, notably Oluwole Betiku.

David Shaw seemed particularly excited about the presence of 4 defensive linemen in Stanford's 2016 recruiting haul, which he considers a rarity. "I can't remember the last time we had that many," he said. "That's special." Bo Peek, Thomas Schaffer, Michael Williams, and Jovan Swann signed with the Cardinal Wednesday. Shaw said the linemen may not have to play immediately because Luke Kaumatule has impressed as he's bulked up to 300 pounds, but acknowledged that the added depth is a welcome addition for the Cardinal. "Our new freshmen are bigger than the seniors who just left us," Shaw said.

Stanford's 2016 recruiting class is filled with interesting connections. Wide receiver Donald Stewart is the cousin of NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith and professional boxer Roy Jones Jr. Running back Trevor Speights is the cousin of Golden State Warriors player Marreese Speights, and defensive lineman Thomas Schaffer will become the first FBS player from Austria.

Stanford head coach David Shaw discusses his program's 2016 recruiting class, which has currently signed 25 players. The Cardinal netted a record 6 players from the state of Texas. They also signed the first ever FBS player from Austria.

Oregon sits at No. 27 in the recruiting rankings. Not the greatest class in the Pac-12 but it goes a long way in filling depth at quarterback and linebacker. The Ducks took three QBs and seven different players that could develop into linebackers.

Mark Helfrich was asked about recruiting antics (cough, cough tree climbing and sleepovers) and he said that there's "just not a lot of reality" in some of that stuff. Oregon, he said, recruits the way they coach. Hey, who knows -- maybe Harbaugh has his players climb trees and play shirtless Bama ball in practice?
