The Final Punch
Dec. 29, 1978: Ohio State lost so much more than a game during the 1978 Gator Bowl. Trailing Clemson by a 17-15 score with just over two minutes to play, the Buckeyes drove into field goal range. But then Clemson nose guard Charlie Bauman intercepted Art Schlichter's pass, sealing the Tigers' victory. Bauman was knocked out of bounds on the OSU sideline during his return, and Buckeyes coach Woody Hayes, then 65 years old, took a swing at him. Hayes was fired and never coached again.
