Jan. 2, 1939: It may seem incomprehensible after decades of modern futility, but Duke was once a football power. And its best team was the 1938 squad, one of only three since 1920 to complete a regular season unbeaten, untied and unscored-upon. Coach Wallace Wade's Blue Devils led 3-0 late in the game, and USC turned to its backup quarterback, Doyle Nave. But Nave completed four straight passes to "Antelope" Al Krueger, the last for the winning touchdown with a minute remaining.
