A Quarter Shy
Nov. 28, 1964: In coach Ara Parseghian's first season, the Fighting Irish were 10-0 and ranked No. 1. They seemed to be well on their way to another championship, leading the Trojans 17-0 at halftime at the Coliseum. But USC quarterback Craig Fertig led the Trojans to a stirring comeback and then threw a touchdown to Rod Sherman on a fourth-down play with 1:33 to go. Parseghian later said, "I like to think our record in 1964 was 9 and ¾ and ¼."
