Biggest First Down
Dec. 31, 1973: The what-ifs in this Sugar Bowl have haunted Tide fans for years. What if Alabama hadn't had two special-teams breakdowns (an Irish kickoff return for a touchdown and a missed extra point)? What if Bear Bryant's bet on his defense had paid off? Alabama, down 24-23 and near midfield, punted and pinned Notre Dame at its 1. On third-and-9, with 2:12 to play, Tom Clements completed a 36-yard pass to tight end Robin Weber. It was Weber's first catch all season.
