Research Notes

  • Accounting for his usage (59 plays) and efficiency, Deshaun Watson contributed 11.1 points above what would be expected of an average QB with the same number of plays. That's the second most by a quarterback in a BCS title game or CFP game in the last 10 seasons (behind AJ McCarron in 2013 BC Championship Game (11.2)

  • Clemson ran for a school bowl-record 312 yards Thursday. Deshaun Watson and Wayne Gallman each rushed for 100 yards, becoming the third set of teammates to each eclipse 100 yards in the Orange Bowl. The Tigers beat Oklahoma 40-6 last season despite running for 68 yards, its fewest in the last four seasons. Watson, who did not play against Oklahoma last season, ran for 145 yards Thursday, setting the Orange Bowl record for the most rush yards by a quarterback.

  • Clemson had success on zone-read rushes, gaining 194 yards on 30 such rushes. That is the most yards the Tigers have gained on zone-read rushes in the last five seasons - and the most the Sooners have allowed in five years. The Tigers averaged 8.7 yards per rush when Watson kept the ball on zone reads and 6.3 when he handed it off Gallman.

  • Deshaun Watson had a career-high 119 yards on 19 designed runs and tied his career high with four such 10-yard runs.

  • Oklahoma: suffered consecutive bowl losses by 20 points or more for 1st time in program history (lost by 34 in Russell Athletic Bowl last season, also against Clemson)

  • Oklahoma was held below 100 yards rushing twice this season; the Sooners had exactly 67 rush yards in each of its losses (against Texas and Clemson).

  • Deshaun Watson has rushed for 100 yards in five of his last six games; South Florida's Marlon Mack is the only other FBS player with five 100-yard games since the beginning of November.
