College Football Power Rankings - Week 6
At the midway point of the season, it seems we've settled on a big three in LSU, Alabama and Oklahoma. The Tigers and Tide are on a collision course for their Nov. 5 meeting in Tuscaloosa. Might the Sooners have to wait that long to leapfrog one of them?
Three teams -- Georgia Tech, Illinois and Kansas State -- find themselves in the top 20 after being nowhere to be found in the preseason ranking.
Houston, Texas A&M and Notre Dame enter this week's top 25.
Here are this week's Power Rankings:
Overall | Voters 1-6 | Voters 7-12 | Voters 13-18 | Voters 19-25| College Football Power Rankings - Week 6 | |||||
| RANK | TEAM / RECORD | TRENDING | PTS | COMMENT | |
| 1 | -- Last Week: 1 | 618 | That sparkle in LSU's eyes was the result of the Tigers seeing a freshman QB take the field for Florida. The Tigers put a hurting on the Gators in a 41-11 win, even giving UF a dose of its own medicine with a Jordan Jefferson jump pass TD. | ||
| 2 | -- Last Week: 2 | 597 | Vanderbilt has never beaten a top-5 opponent in 46 tries; it was easy to see why as the Tide rolled over the Commodores 34-0. With 107 rushing yards, Trent Richardson has already surpassed his output from 2010. | ||
| 3 | -- Last Week: 3 | 585 | Oklahoma D: 21, Texas 17. The offense was pretty good, too. It was a dominating display by the Sooners and one they won't soon let Longhorn fans regret. Could it be that they'll have to wait until after LSU and Alabama play to surpass one in the rankings? | ||
| 4 | -- Last Week: 4 | 540 | Wisconsin was off this week. The Badgers haven't played a true road game yet this season, a trend that continues this week with a visit from Indiana. Then the true test begins with consecutive road trips to Michigan State and Ohio State. | ||
| 5 | -- Last Week: 5 | 510 | Kellen Moore assumed sole possession of sixth place on the all-time list for career touchdown passes in Boise State's 57-7 win over Fresno State; it was the Broncos' sixth straight win over the Bulldogs. | ||
| 6 | -- Last Week: 6 | 492 | Colorado's inaugural Pac-12 road game ended like the previous 18 road games for the Buffaloes: in a loss. Stanford improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1951 with a 48-7 win. | ||
| 7 | -- Last Week: 7 | 489 | What happens when the nation's worst defense takes the field against the No. 2-ranked offense? Seventy points sounds about right. Brandon Weeden tossed five touchdown passes in limited action in the Cowboys' 70-28 win. A visit to Austin awaits. | ||
| 8 | -- Last Week: 8 | 455 | You could hear a pin drop when Tajh Boyd crumpled to the ground in considerable pain. A hard hit to the hip doesn't appear to be as serious as it looked -- he's listed as probable for Saturday's game against Maryland. | ||
| 9 | -- Last Week: 9 | 431 | How long will Oregon be without LaMichael James? Chip Kelly isn't telling. James was forced out of the Ducks' win over Cal with a dislocated elbow. This after turning in his third straight game with 200-plus yards rushing. | ||
| 10 | 2 Last Week: 12 | 382 | The Razorbacks have responded in a big way after their loss to Alabama, following a comeback win over Texas A&M by beating Auburn 38-14. The Hogs' defense even got in on the act, stifling any chance of a Tigers comeback with two fourth-quarter INTs. | ||
| 11 | 2 Last Week: 13 | 367 | Such is the mercurial nature of Denard Robinson's talent that he can throw three interceptions in the first half and still be player of the game by the end of regulation. Robinson led the Wolverines to a comeback win over Northwestern. | ||
| 12 | 1 Last Week: 11 | 362 | Maryland clawed its way back to within five points late in the fourth quarter, but Georgia Tech was able to withstand the late rally, holding on for a 21-16 win to take command of the ACC Coastal. A visit to Virginia awaits. | ||
| 13 | 4 Last Week: 17 | 289 | A 41-20 win over Indiana gave Illinois its first 6-0 start since 1951. The going will only get tougher for the Illini from here on out: They still have visits from Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin and travel to Penn State the rest of the way. | ||
| 14 | 4 Last Week: 18 | 265 | UConn cost West Virginia a BCS bid last season; the Huskies didn't extract much flesh from the Mountaineers this time around. Geno Smith passed for 450 yards and four touchdowns to lead WVU to a 43-16 win to open Big East play. | ||
| 15 | 1 Last Week: 14 | 257 | The Cornhuskers were on their way to another humbling Big Ten defeat but came alive in the second half to score a historic upset over Ohio State. Rex Burkhead led the way with two fourth-quarter touchdowns in a 34-27 win. | ||
| 16 | 3 Last Week: 19 | 252 | Collin Klein punched in three short-yardage touchdowns and K-State's D bent but didn't break late to seal a 24-17 win over Missouri. The win sent the Wildcats to 5-0 for the first time since 2000 and snapped a five-game losing streak against the Tigers. | ||
| 17 | 3 Last Week: 20 | 246 | For the first time in a long time, Steve Spurrier had something nice to say about his quarterback play. Connor Shaw stepped in for Stephen Garcia and tossed four touchdowns in a 54-3 win over Kentucky, avenging last season's loss. | ||
| 18 | 3 Last Week: 21 | 216 | The Sun Devils have already beaten the previous big kid on the Pac-12 block in USC; they have their shot against the current, feathery league favorite when they travel to Eugene. ASU came closer than most to troubling the Ducks last year, losing 42-31. | ||
| 19 | 3 Last Week: 22 | 157 | No ACC team has ever started 0-2 in league play and gone on to win the conference title. Virginia Tech came close to falling into an 0-2 hole, but Logan Thomas scored with just a minute left to push the Hokies past Miami 38-35. | ||
| 20 | 5 Last Week: 25 | 111 | Terrance Ganaway rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns to help Baylor bounce back against Iowa State. The Bears are set to embark on a brutal stretch with consecutive road trips to Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. | ||
| 21 | 3 Last Week: 24 | 110 | The Spartans enjoyed a week off and the timing couldn't have been better: They face upcoming visits from Michigan and Wisconsin followed by a visit to Nebraska. | ||
| 22 | 4 Last Week: NR | 83 | The Cougars have scored at least 35 points in each game this season and Case Keenum is leading the nation in passing yards (2,309). Only one of Houston's remaining five opponents (SMU) currently has a winning record. | ||
| 23 | 3 Last Week: NR | 76 | Texas A&M avoided another collapse, handing Texas Tech its first loss of the season with a 45-40 win. The Aggies host Baylor on Saturday in a matchup of 1-1 Big 12 teams. | ||
| 24 | 14 Last Week: 10 | 75 | Youth was served a healthy dose of humble pie at the Cotton Bowl as a young Texas team was put through the ringer against Oklahoma. The Longhorns don't have long to lick their wounds; a visit from Oklahoma State awaits. | ||
| 25 | 1 Last Week: NR | 54 | Notre Dame dropped 59 on Air Force as the Fighting Irish scored the most points since the end of the Lou Hotlz era. They head into their bye week in the midst of a four-game winning streak. A visit from USC awaits on Oct. 22. | ||
