Michigan State has established a scholarship fund in honor of former punter Mike Sadler, who was killed in an automobile accident last weekend along with Nebraska punter Sam Foltz. One Spartans player each year will receive the scholarship.

Deshaun Watson and Dalvin Cook, who each received first-place Heisman votes in 2015, were not unanimous preseason All-ACC picks. Going into the season they are clearly the favorites for the conference's player of the year. Maybe there will be an ACC QB and two RBs better than those two, but it's hard to justify leaving them off preseason ballots.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher's offense is considered one of the more complex, and he gave us a taste Tuesday. Fisher drew up one of his favorite plays, and there were route adjustments for each receiver based on coverages and open space. It's a lot to process in a play designed to attack several coverages.

First-year Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said he had to find himself as an assistant and again as a head coach. His time at Memphis helped him develop his coaching identity before coming to Virginia Tech. Now he is morphing the program to his own philosophy instead of trying to mirror mentors.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer did meet with Penn State's James Franklin today to address the allegations of negative recruiting against the Nittany Lions. "There's no story," Meyer said. "James came up to me and said, 'I did not accuse Ohio State of negative recruiting.' I said, 'I'm good,' and shook his hand."

Here's what Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany told me about his future with the league. "My contract is through 2020," Delany said. "A contract is a contract. Retirement is when someone wants to go. I expect to work through my contract. I'm healthy and I enjoy doing what I do. Anything beyond that, I don't know." Responding to the USA Today report that he will retire in 2020, Delany, 68, said it's a "fair inference" but he could also step down before 2020 and doesn't know how he'll feel when the contract expires. He's still healthy and energetic and wants to focus on providing opportunities for student-athletes.

Michigan State's Mark Dantonio had an interesting take on what he learned from the last time the Spartans replaced a longtime starting QB. Andrew Maxwell struggled while succeeding Kirk Cousins in 2012 and the team went 6-6. "Don't anoint someone and put the pressure on one individual," Dantonio said. That's why he isn't talking up presumed starter Tyler O'Connor, who replaces Connor Cook.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said he hasn't put a timetable on when he will name a starting quarterback between Sean Maguire and Deondre Francois but has an idea about when he wants to know. "Ten days out we'll start understanding who we're going to start or which way we're going," Fisher said. Maguire and Francois will get the majority reps once fall practice opens next week.

Wisconsin LB Vince Biegel has watched film of LSU star Leonard Fournette this summer in anticipation of the teams' Sept. 3 opener. The Badgers also played LSU in Fournette's collegiate debut in 2014. "We're going to have our hands full. It's going to take a collective effort to stop him," Biegel said.
