Shamrock Series to Indy in '14
The Sept. 13, 2014, matchup is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Lucas Oil Stadium. In addition, the in-state rivals have added future matchups as the series will resume in 2020.
"We are excited to bring this great instate rivalry game to Indianapolis next season," Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke said in a statement. "Both schools have great fan and alumni bases there, so it will make for an entertaining evening of college football."
It was also announced Thursday that the Boilermakers will play a home-and-home series with Virginia Tech in 2015 (West Lafayette) and 2023 (Blacksburg, Va.).
The game against Notre Dame was originally slated for South Bend, Ind. Purdue will now have access to "some 10,000 seats -- twice the normal visiting-school allotment," per the release.
The Fighting Irish have played the Shamrock Series contest in each of the past five years, moving a home game to a major metropolitan area. They have traveled to San Antonio, New York, the Washington, D.C., region, Chicago and the Dallas area. They have unveiled innovative uniform combinations for each of those games as well.
Notre Dame and Purdue also said they've added games in 2020 and 2021 and 2024 to 2026. The schools, with campuses 110 miles apart, have played every year since 1946 and 85 times overall.
The 2014 game had been the last on the rivals' current contract. Notre Dame has had to make cuts to its Big Ten matchups since announcing it'll play five ACC games a year starting in 2014. The Big Ten is also moving to a nine-game conference schedule in 2016, further complicating matters.
Michigan is the most notable cut, as the 2014 meeting is the final scheduled matchup between the two.
