The Pac-12 championship game is headed to the Bay Area.
Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York and 49ers team president Paraag Marathe will make the official announcement during a news conference Thursday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., where this year's game will be played on Dec. 5.
The conference has not officially said if the agreement includes future games, but that is expected to be included in Thursday's announcement.
Since welcoming Colorado and Utah to the conference in 2011, the Pac-12 has held the game at the stadium of the division champion with the better record. Oregon hosted the initial game, Stanford in 2012 and Arizona State in 2013.
The Pac-12 had been the only power conference not to hold its championship game at a neutral site. The SEC plays its game in Atlanta, the Big Ten in Indianapolis and the ACC in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Big 12 does not hold a conference championship.
The 49ers' new stadium, which will open with a Major League Soccer game on Aug. 2, also will serve as the home for the Fight Hunger Bowl, which previously had been played at AT&T Park in San Francisco. A Pac-12 regular-season game between Oregon and Cal also will be played there Oct. 24.
