Northwestern has suspended star running back/kick returner Venric Mark for the first two games of the season for an undisclosed violation of team policy.

Mark will miss the Aug. 30 opener against California and the Sept. 6 game vs. Northern Illinois, both of which are at home.

"I made a mistake and am prepared to deal with the consequences of that," the senior said in a statement released by the school. "There's no one that holds me to a higher standard than the one I hold myself to, so nobody is more disappointed than I am."

Mark ran for more than 1,000 yards and was an All-American punt returner in 2012. He missed most of the 2013 season with a variety of injuries before receiving a medical hardship and fifth year of eligibility from the NCAA.
