Deon Clarke, two WRs suspended by Virginia Tech

Senior starting linebacker Deon Clarke is among three players suspended by Virginia Tech for Saturday's Camping World Independence Bowl, coach Frank Beamer announced.

Clarke and wide receiver Kevin Asante were suspended for unspecified reasons after the team's first night at the bowl game site in Shreveport, Louisiana, according to The Washington Post. Wide receiver Demitri Knowles didn't travel with the team after being late to practices and meetings.

"To me, all those little things are a sign of this game is important or not important," Beamer said. "That's me."

Beamer is coaching his final game after announcing in November that he would retire at the end of the season.

All three players are seniors who would have been playing in their final game.

Clarke had three sacks this season. Freshman Tremaine Edmunds will start against Tulsa in Clarke's place. Edmunds started against Georgia Tech earlier this season after Clarke had been benched for a half for disciplinary reasons.

Asante and Knowles each had one catch this season.
