Mel Tucker hired as Georgia defensive coordinator

Alabama assistant Mel Tucker will be Kirby Smart's defensive coordinator at Georgia next season.

Tucker joined Alabama as defensive backs coach and assistant head coach on Jan. 29, 2015. Before that, he served as a defensive coordinator in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns in 2008, Jacksonville Jaguars from 2009 to 2012 and Chicago Bears from 2013 to 2014. He was the Jaguars' interim head coach in 2011 when Jack Del Rio was fired and coached Jacksonville to a 2-3 record.

Tucker drew interest as a candidate for UTSA's head coach and Tennessee's defensive coordinator, according to a source.

Tucker also has worked at Ohio State, LSU, Miami (Ohio) and Michigan State.

Smart, who served as Alabama defensive coordinator this season, was hired as Georgia's head coach last month but will finish the season with the Crimson Tide when they play in the College Football Playoff title game against Clemson on Monday.
