Virginia Tech starting outside linebacker Jeron Gouveia-Winslow suffered a Lisfranc sprain in his left foot in last Saturday's win over Miami and will miss the rest of the season, the school announced on Thursday.
The sprain was confirmed Thursday after an MRI. He will have surgery next week at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg.
Gouveia-Winslow, who started five games this season and had nine tackles and one interception, will be replaced by Alonzo Tweedy in the starting lineup with Nick Dew at No. 2 on the depth chart.
Tweedy will be making his first career start. He replaced Gouveia-Winslow in the Miami game last week and had eight tackles and a sack against the Hurricanes.
The Hokies (5-1, 1-1 ACC) also announced that starting defensive end James Gayle will miss the Wake Forest game with a sprained left ankle. Gayle is second on the team with 3½ sacks and has 6½ tackles for loss.
Without Gayle and Gouveia-Winslow in the starting lineup, the Hokies will have two players making their first career starts in Tweedy and Tyrel Wilson. True freshman Corey Marshall, who replaced injured starter Antoine Hopkins at defensive tackle last week, will be making his second start.
