Source: Brent Pease to join Gators

Boise State offensive coordinator Brent Pease is expected to be named Florida's offensive coordinator Wednesday, a source close to Florida confirmed to ESPN.com Tuesday.

Pease spent six years as an assistant with the Broncos and replaces Charlie Weis, who left Florida after one season to become the coach at Kansas.

Pease had served his previous five seasons as Boise State's wide receivers coach before taking over as offensive coordinator in 2011. He also served as assistant head coach his final four years there.

Under Pease's direction, Boise State tied for 10th nationally in total offense, averaging 481.31 yards per game.

Led by Kellen Moore, who is the nation's active career leader in passing efficiency (166.74) and wins by a quarterback (50), the Broncos ranked 11th nationally in passing (309.38) and fourth in passing efficiency (171.56).

Last week, Pease emerged as a top target for both Florida and Alabama, which is in search of a new offensive coordinator after Jim McElwain left to become the coach at Colorado State.

Pease was in Gainesville, Fla., this past weekend and interviewed with first-year coach Will Muschamp, but also had been expected to meet with Alabama coach Nick Saban on Tuesday.

With Pease joining the Gators, the Crimson Tide is expected to turn its attention to a couple of NFL assistants, including former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

Koetter, who spent the past five seasons in Jacksonville, is a former head coach at Arizona State (2001 to 2006) and Boise State (1998 to 2000).

New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who has been mentioned as a candidate for a couple of NFL head coaching vacancies, also might be on Alabama's short list.

Pease takes over a Florida offense that was in total disarray under Weis. The Gators, who finished with six losses for the first time since 1987, ranked 105th nationally in total offense (328.69) and 71st in scoring (25.46).

Running backs coach Brian White, who served as interim offensive coordinator after Weis' exit, will remain on staff, a source close to White told GatorNation's Michael DiRocco.

Florida will enter the 2012 season with plenty of unproven offensive players, as well as new starters at quarterback and running back, as seniors John Brantley, Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps will be gone.
