Coach Jeff Tedford announced the move on Thursday without specifying what Whiteside did that merited punishment.
Whiteside was one of the top linebackers coming out of high school in Newport Beach, Calif., last year. He enrolled early at Cal in January 2011 and played 10 games as a freshman. He had 17 tackles, three sacks, four tackles for loss and two forced fumbles last season.
Whiteside was listed as a second-string outside linebacker on Cal's post-spring ball depth chart.
