SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly has undergone surgery for a herniated disk in his lower back.
The school says he is resting comfortably after Thursday's surgery and should return home this weekend. He is expected to make a full recovery by the time the Irish open preseason camp Aug. 4.
Kelly will be entering his third season at Notre Dame. The Irish finished 8-5 in each of his first two seasons. Notre Dame opens the 2012 season on Sept. 1 against Navy in Dublin, Ireland.
