Source: Rob Bolden visits LSU
A source confirmed Monday morning that Bolden hasn't been on Penn State's team for more than a week. He was technically off the team once he was released from his scholarship -- before the NCAA's sanctions against the university were handed down, the source said.
Because of the timing, it's unclear whether LSU would benefit from a stipulation that would afford it an extra scholarship this year for taking on a transferring Penn State player.
Attempts to contact Bolden, who in 2010 became the first freshman to start a season at quarterback in 100 years at Penn State, on Sunday were unsuccessful.
A source with direct knowledge of the situation said Penn State coach Bill O'Brien granted Bolden a release from his scholarship prior to the sanctions being handed down Monday. The source did not say how long ago the release was granted.
Bolden attempted to transfer after the 2011 season but Joe Paterno, then still coach, refused to release him from his scholarship.
Bolden, a 6-foot-3, 214-pound native of Orchard Lake, Mich., completed 165 of 328 passes for 2,045 yards with seven touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his two seasons at Happy Valley. If he goes to LSU, he would add needed depth to the Tigers. LSU has just one quarterback -- starter Zach Mettenberger -- who is not a freshman.
Also, true freshman Jeremy Liggins is on the fall roster, but he was struggling to meet NCAA initial eligibility requirements and signed with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College during the summer. It's unclear whether he will meet his minimal requirements to join the Tigers.
