Bo Pelini out of hospital
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska coach Bo Pelini, who left Memorial Stadium by ambulance in the middle of Saturday's 42-13 win against Arkansas State, has been released from a Lincoln hospital after undergoing tests.
Pelini fell ill during the first half, and a member of the Nebraska medical staff was seen checking Pelini's pulse.
"Everything is fine," Pelini said in a statement. "They ran some precautionary tests and everything checked out just fine. I plan to be back at work tomorrow. I'm proud of our team and coaching staff for the way they responded this afternoon."
Pelini stayed on the sideline the rest of the half and was taken to a hospital after doctors treated him in the locker room.
Nebraska spokesman Keith Mann said Pelini was released from the hospital Saturday night after undergoing tests.
Defensive coordinator John Papuchis led the team onto the field for the third quarter and shared head coaching duties with offensive coordinator Tim Beck.
"Bo is as close to me as anybody," Papuchis said, "so my initial reaction was more as a friend than business colleague. I had to compose myself for a second because of my concern for his well-being. At the end of the day, he would want nothing other than for us to go out and perform as well as we possibly could, so you have to pull together and go to work."
Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne declined to comment on the nature of Pelini's symptoms. Osborne said it was serious enough that the medical staff thought Pelini needed to be checked out at the hospital.
Linebacker Will Compton said there was a subdued mood in the locker room when Papuchis and Beck told the team that Pelini was heading to the hospital.
"We did it for him out there;, we did it for each other," Compton said.
